21.09 Victory for Cantwell in Aarhus
30. June 07
World leader Christian Cantwell topped local favourite Joachim Olsen and Dan Taylor in the men's Shot Put, the feature event at the Aarhus Games on Friday (29). Cantwell, who was a disappointing fifth at the U.S. championships last weekend, took the top spot with a third round 21.09. The 26-year-old, who reached a world-leading 21.96 at the adidas Track Classic a month ago, had just two legal throws. His other was a 19.69 effort in the opening round. Olsen, who extended the Danish national record to 21.63 in Copenhagen earlier this month, threw beyond 20 metres with each of his six throw, topped by his 20.82 in the second round. Osaka-bound Dan Taylor, runner-up at the US trials, was third with a 20.39 best. Elsewhere, Moroccans Ahmed Debay and Brahim Taleb won the 5000 and 3000m Steeplechase in 13:23.68 and 8:35.20 respectively, Algerian Samir Khadar took the 1500 in 3:39.26, California Molefe of Botswana was an easy victor in the 400 (46.26), and David Giralt of Cuba won the Triple Jump with a 16.80 leap. Danish record holder Christina Schwerin produced a home victory in the Javelin Throw, reaching 56.46.
