German Ralf Bartels is a consummate championship performer and once again hinted at his medal potential to lead the nine automatic qualifiers with a mighty 20.91m second round heave.

Bartels, the European champion and World outdoor bronze medallist, produced a 20.22m first round effort, before finding his range with his second attempt to book his spot in Saturday's final.

Also advancing from qualification group A was Olympic fourth-placer Dylan Armstrong (20.50m) of Canada and world No.2 Andrei Mikhnevich (20.34m). The Belarus athlete did not expend any more energy than was necessary and was 0.04 in advance of the automatic qualification standard.

Defending champion Christian Cantwell remains on track to become the first man to win three World Indoor titles in this event by serenely advancing thanks to a first round effort of 20.72m.

Australian Scott Martin produced fireworks with his third round effort of 20.61m to also qualify and Great Britain's Carl Myerscough also left his best until last, registering 20.44m to return tomorrow.

German's World Junior champion David Storl (20.49m) and Belarus No.2 Pavel Lyzhyn (20.42) also secured final spots.

Olympic champion Tomasz Majewsji, though, looked less convincing qualifying eighth best courtesy of his third round effort of 20.38m. The Pole's best was respectable, rather than spectacular, and he will need to step up a couple of gears to make the medal podium.
