Toledo continues to improve Javelin World Youth Best

7 March 2010 - Sixteen-year-old Argentinean Braian Toledo bettered the Javelin (700g) World Youth Best by reaching 89.34m on Saturday 6 March in Mar del Plata.

In his second competition of 2010, and twenty-one days after throwing 84.85 in Buenos Aires and setting the previous WYB, Toledo was impressive once again. Profiting from a windy afternoon, the bronze medalist from the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, reached 89.34m in his first throw to the delight of the attendance.

After the smooth initial effort, Toledo, born in Marcos Paz on 8 September 1993, some 60km west of Buenos Aires, made two more attempts, but they were short, and therefore annulled by the thrower, who later decided not to take his last three shots.

“I’m very happy, as I didn’t think I could better the previous mark by such a big margin (4.49m)”, Toledo told a reporter for “La Nación”. “I felt very well, and I’m enjoying every moment of this great time.”

“The preparation in these last few weeks has been very important. The throw was very controlled and smooth,” his coach, Gustavo Osorio, told La Nación. “He continues to evolve, but we are not going to burn stages. We still have a long way to go, however, I feel this record could soon be improved,” Osorio added.

The preceding mark to Toledo’s WYB was 83.02 by Valeriy Iordan, set in Vladimir on 17 May 2009.

Next on Toledo’s agenda is the regional qualification for the 2010 Singapore World Youth Games, in São Paulo, on 27-28 March.
