1st European Discus Throw Conference
“Breaking the Myths”

During the last years the discus throw has developed fast after the recent low period. The results have improved; the geography of the sport has expanded. Top 100 throwers of the world constantly include throwers from more than 40 (!) countries that is the best figure in the whole Athletics. At the same time, an unprecedented big generation hange has started in the discus throw where especially talented athletes born in 1985, but particularly in 1987 and later, have reached to the world top results during the last few years. Coaches and scientists all over the world are searching for new possibilities and the results can be seen. This year the top 50 ranking includes for the first time the example of a 2,5 spin discus throw from Nikolay Sedyuk (RUS). New winds are blowing in biomechanical analysis, nutrition, and methodology, as well as in the strategic management of training process. Discus throw is positioning itself as an innovative flagship of Athletics.

On international level the fast rise of Estonian discus thrower Gerd Kanter and the innovative methodology of his coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson in the development of his athlete has been of great interest. Gerd Kanter’s team has set an objective to break the myths in sports through the achievement of high results. In addition to international specialists, the specialists of different fields belonging to Kanter’s team also introduce new winds at the Tallinn workshop. We hope there will be an active cooperation of all coaches taking part in the workshop analysing the following questions:

1. What does actually throw the discus - speed or strength?
2. Is the current system of indicators (indicators of strength, generally developing throwing exercises, etc.) sufficient in order to analyse an athletes´ development?
3. Is discus throw close to some new technical invention?
4. How does the future discus thrower and discus throw look like?
5. What is the throwers “normal eating”?
6. What kind of help can the coach get from biomechanical studies?
7. What is the role of supporting sciences (strategic management, communication, psychology) in athlete’s development?
8. How to popularise the throwing sports?

The task of the workshop is to analyse these and many other questions, we are waiting for you to send your suggestions and ideas to the E-mail: mariken@ekjl.ee.
