Gerd Kanter takes his fifth European Cup Winter Throwing gold 15. March 08

There was a replay of the Osaka podium in the men's Discus competition on this first day of the 8th European Cup Winter Throwing in Split (CRO).
In sunny, but windy conditions (not favourable for Discus throwing) Estonia's Gerd Kanter took the European Cup Winter Throwing title for the fifth time with a best throw of 65.25m. German Robert Harting was second with 64.34m and Holland's Rutger Smith again finished third with 63.80m. Fourth place went to Turkish record holder Ercumet Olgundeniz (62.04m) and former Olympic medallist Frants Kruger now representing Finland was fifth (61.71m).

There was disappointment in the Ukrainian camp, as 16-year-old throwing prodigy Mykyta Nesterenko failed to live up to his usual standard and fouled six times.

Italian Marco Lingua was the surprise Hammer winner, with a new lifetime best of 77.87m. Hungarian Osaka fifth placer Krisztian Pars was second with 77.06m and Belarus Winter Throws Champion Dmitry Shako finished third with a 76.86m throw. Former Olympic medallist Nicola Vizzoni of Italy took a narrow fourth place (75.88m) victory from Turkey's World Championship finalist Esref Apak (75.81m), while Osaka eighth placer Markus Esser of Germany had a poor outing with just 70.51m and five fouls to finish 11th overall. Bergur Petursson of Iceland won the B-group with a new Icelandic record of 73.00m that put the 22-year-old in ninth place.


The Italian success continued into the women's Shot Put, where European Indoor Champion Assunta Legnante regained some confidence after her disappointing knockout in the qualification rounds at last weekend's World Indoor Championships in Valencia. The powerful 29-year-old won with an 18.98m throw - her second best outdoor mark following the 19.04m Italian record she threw in Busto Arsizio in 2006.

Russian Champion Anna Omarova, who finished ninth in Osaka and eighth in Valencia, was second with 18.38m, while Valencia fifth place finisher Chiara Rosa (ITA) took the final podium place with 18.05m. German indoor sensation Christina Schwanitz finished in fourth, with a disappointing 17.65m that was far away from her indoor best of 19.68m.

The U23 competitions also saw some interesting results, with three titles going to Russians. Mariya Abakumova achieved an excellent 62.07m meeting record in the Javelin (this result would have been enough for a bronze in the Senior competition). Last year's European Junior Champion Nikolay Sedyuk showed great improvements to win the Discus in the meeting record of 63.20m, while 20-year-old Irina Tarasova finished the Russian treble with gold in the U23 Shot Put (16.73m).
